Nusa Penida Day Trip from Bali: Complete 2026 Guide

How to plan the perfect Nusa Penida day trip. Boats, costs, best spots, and what most guides won't tell you.

Is a Day Trip Enough?

Yes, if you plan well. A day trip lets you see the 3–4 most iconic spots. If you want to explore east Nusa Penida as well (Atuh Beach, Teletubbies Hills), stay overnight for 2 full days.

How to Get There

Fast boats depart from Sanur Harbor on Bali's east coast. The crossing takes 30–45 minutes. Boats leave between 7:00–9:00 AM, with returns between 3:00–5:00 PM.

Boat Ticket Prices

Economy: 150K–200K IDR one-way ($9–12)
Round-trip: 300K–400K IDR ($19–25)
Premium operators: 500K IDR round-trip (better boats, less crowded)

Pro tip: Book the 7:30 AM boat to maximize your time on the island. The earlier you arrive, the fewer crowds at photo spots.

Getting Around Nusa Penida

You must hire a driver on the island — scooters are dangerous due to steep, unpaved roads. The island's infrastructure is still rough.

Driver Options

Private car + driver (full day): 500K–700K IDR ($31–44). Covers 3–4 spots with lunch.
All-inclusive package (boat + driver + lunch): 600K–800K IDR ($37–50) when booked through BaliBuddy.

The Must-See Spots (West Nusa Penida)

1. Kelingking Beach (T-Rex Cliff)

The most iconic view in all of Bali. The cliff formation looks like a T-Rex head from above. The viewpoint is free but crowded from 10 AM onwards. The hike down to the beach takes 30–40 minutes and is very steep — only for fit travelers with proper footwear. Most people just take photos from the top.

2. Angel's Billabong

A natural infinity pool carved into the coastline. Stunning turquoise water during low tide. Don't swim here during high tide — waves are extremely dangerous and people have drowned. Check tide times before visiting.

3. Broken Beach (Pasih Uug)

A natural rock arch formation with crystal-clear water flowing underneath. No swimming allowed but the views and photos are incredible. Usually visited together with Angel's Billabong (5-minute walk between them).

4. Crystal Bay

The best beach on Nusa Penida for swimming and snorkeling. Clear water, white sand, and coral reefs close to shore. Great for snorkeling with manta rays (seasonal, Oct–Apr). Beach has basic warungs for lunch.

Suggested Day Trip Schedule

6:00 AM: Leave your hotel for Sanur Harbor
7:30 AM: Fast boat departs for Nusa Penida
8:15 AM: Arrive, meet your driver
8:30–9:30 AM: Kelingking Beach viewpoint (go early, fewer crowds!)
10:00–11:00 AM: Angel's Billabong + Broken Beach
11:30 AM–12:30 PM: Lunch at a local warung
1:00–2:30 PM: Crystal Bay (swim, snorkel, relax)
3:00 PM: Return to harbor for boat back to Sanur
4:00 PM: Arrive back in Bali

What to Bring

Sunscreen (reef-safe preferred), water (bring extra — limited shops), comfortable shoes (not flip-flops — the terrain is rough), swimsuit, waterproof phone case, cash (limited ATMs on the island), and motion sickness tablets if prone to seasickness (the crossing can be very rough).

What Most Guides Won't Tell You

The roads are genuinely bad — think potholes, steep unpaved hills, and no guardrails. If you have back problems or are pregnant, consider this carefully. The boat crossing can be rough, especially during rainy season. And the island gets HOT — there's very little shade at most viewpoints. Bring more water than you think you need.
